Leonardo Santos vs. William Macario -- Welterweight bout (TUF: Brazil 2 finals)

As in most of his victories, and despite being an accredited BJJ champion, Nova Uniao rep Leo Santos employed sheer heart and will to pull out the win. A natural lightweight, Santos agreed to compete as a welterweight on Brazil's sophomore iteration of the popular reality show for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity alone.

Macario, a young (age 21) and undefeated talent with heavy hands and stout wrestling, laid out the perfect game-plan in the first, but just didn't follow it in the second round. He began by establishing his range with a stiff right cross and 1-2, then backpedaling and warding off takedowns when Santos shrank the gap. After defending a few Santos takedowns, Macario hit one of his own late in the first and did a good job of maintaining strong position and posture before throwing ground and pound. Silva scooted back up to his feet before the bell but was unable to mount much significant offense.

In the second stanza, Santos turned up the heat on his striking and nearly connected on a swooping head kick. Rather than keep Santos at bay with crisp leather and elusive footwork, Macario did most of the work for Santos by initiating clinches and staying connected to the grappler. In a prolonged clinch exchange, Santos started to hit a clean outside trip from the 50/50 clinch but Macario, off balance, blatantly grabbed onto the fence to not only repel the takedown, but land in top position. Referee Marc Goddard was astute to note the foul and call time, but opted to warn Macario rather than take a point ... which is purely a judgment call.

Regardless, they clinched up again on the restart and Santos hit the same trip from the same position and got on top. From there, it was classic Leo Santos. The BJJ phenom virtually teleported to half guard and bypassed side control altogether by carving directly into full mount and immediately seeking out his signature arm triangle. Macario was aware of Santos' intention and tried to keep his arm out of trouble, but Santos persisted doggedly until he was able to lock in the hold. Again, Macario fought valiantly and almost slipped his arm out, but Santos based down and tightened his grip to elicit the tapout.

Santos proceeded to flee the scene, vaulting over the fence in search of his longtime friend and training partner, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo. An exalted Santos paid tribute to Aldo in his post-fight speech and accepted the TUF trophy with an ear-to-ear grin. Safe money is on Santos making a beeline for the 155-pound class in the near future.

  • Leonardo Santos defeats William Macario by submission (arm triangle), Round 2.
