Forbes Highest Paid Athletes

The Forbes 100 highest paid athletes list has come out again, and once again there are no Mixed Martial Artist on the list. I did a piece on it last year, and because fighter pay got hot and heavy on BE recently, I thought I'd throw a quick breakdown on here again. The time frame for the report was from 1 June 2012 to 1 June 2013, and counts endorsements along with pay earn from their contracts or winnings.

This year the 100th highest paid athlete, Soccer star Samuel Eto'o earned $16.4 million. Tiger Woods regained the top spot that he held for 11 years straight prior to the scandals that drove numerous sponsors away, scraping by on only $78.1 Million this year.

The only Mixed Martial Artist that I thought might have an outside chance of gracing the list this year was Georges St. Pierre. He fought twice in the time frame evaluated, and did good business at both events. He also has numerous sponsors, and endorsement money coming in.

GSP for the year headlined events that sold at least 1.6 Million PPVs, and generated over $6.8M in Gate receipts for the UFC. There were also reports that UFC 158 pushed north of 1 million buys, which would drive his value higher. Also consider that in GSP's book he said that during the time he was recovering from his recent knee surgery prior to the Condit fight, he was able to negotiate and land more sponsorship deals than he usually does because he was not as busy training, something that should have pushed his value even higher.

#16 on the list Maheadra Singh Dhoni makes an estimated $28M in endorsements, being the captain of India's national cricket team, and playing in the India Premier League. #83 Li Na is a Chinese female tennis player and makes around $15M in endorsements. Keep that in mind next time you are wondering why UFC wants to get into the India, and China markets. Sponsors are paying big money to star athletes in these markets.

The $34M that Floyd Mayweather is reported to earn is all from fighting, he earns $0 from endorsements.

I think that Jon Jones, or GSP will make this list in the next 2-3 years. They will likely have to either have a monster super fight, or have 3 very successful fights in the evaluated time frame, but I think one or both will make it with their earnings, and sponsorship opportunities.
