The UFC and Dana White love surprises, and Dana recently offered up a big one - original Ultimate Fighters Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar are going to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in July. Griffin's retirement was announced at the UFC 160 post-fight press conference, and Dana offered up the HoF announcement soon after. The only problem was that apparently no one told Griffin or Bonnar about it beforehand. Both men were guest's on AXS TV's Inside MMA, and had a good laugh about the surprise:
Bonnar - "Well, no one actually called and told me!"
Griffin - "Me neither! It might not be true. I found out on twitter."
Bonnar - "If so, this is gonna be a mean joke. I'm gonna be so heartbroken."
Griffin - "I'm gonna be really pissed come July if this is all a prank on twitter that somebody played on me:"
After some clowning around about their friendship, they got a little bit serious with their answers. Griffin was asked about the questionable decision to induct Bonnar despite the fact that he never won a championship:
"Obviously that fight (the TUF 1 Finale) and just being at the right place at the right time. Pretty much the same as me. I'd rather have good timing than skill any day."
Bonnar offered his own take on things as well:
"If they want to put me in the Hall of Fame, then my God, what an honor. I never really expected it. Just to be a part of the UFC was cool enough. Just being on season one (of TUF). And since then, I got an opportunity to do a lot with them with PR, and TV, and merchandising.
Just...what an honor."
Griffin closed out his UFC career with a 10-5 UFC record and won the UFC light heavyweight title. Bonnar was 8-7 in 15 UFC bouts.
