Vemola's six supposed championships were earned from the ages 10-16. Based on Vemola's 1985 birth date, this would put his last national championship at 2001 or 2002. The Czech wrestling federation website indicates that national wrestling championships are held in age groups faithful to classifications set by FILA, international wrestling's governing body. In both 2001 and 2002, Vemola's birth year would have mandated that he wrestled in the cadet age group or higher (those who are in the year of their 16th birthday are too old for schoolboy, the lowest age group). The results on the Czech Federation website show that Vemola did not even place at the Czech national Greco-Roman wrestling championships in any age group for which he was qualified in 2001 or 2002.
Results before 2001 are not available from the Czech Wrestling Federation.
These facts throw considerable doubt over Vemola's wrestling background.
Bloody Elbow has reached out to the Czech Wrestling Federation, Vemola and his management for additional information. We are waiting to hear back.
*UPDATE* The secretary of the Czech Wrestling Federation responded to Mike Riordan's email inquiry with a short, cryptic and unsupported response
Mike's question: ... I am writing to ask whether UFC fighter Karlos Vemola was ever a 6 time Czech wrestling champion from ages 10 to 16. Karlos was born in 1985. This would be in either freestyle or Greco-Roman. I appreciate your help.
Secretary Svagrovska: Dear Mike, yes, based on our available information, it is truth!
It is unclear what exactly the secretary is saying is the truth, no records were furnished.
