Bloody Elbow 2013 Half-Year MMA Awards: Best Comeback

Cameron Spencer

Make your pick for the best MMA comeback from the first half of 2013 in Bloody Elbow's Half Year Awards.

Over the next few days, Bloody Elbow is going to ask for your opinion on some of the best things that have happened in the MMA world over the first half of 2013. There will be a total of six different categories you'll be asked to vote on. For simplicity's sake we're going to stick with high-level and relevant MMA stuff in these posts. While I'm sure there was a ludicrous knockout in an unscheduled MMA event at The Lumberyard strip club in Des Moines, or an insane pancreas lock submission on an obscure ZST! card in Japan, let's just stick to stuff a lot of us have seen, okay? (If that spiel looked familiar, it's because I've used the same one for three years in a row. Originality? What originality?)

It's pretty simple. I'll post some options in a category, you vote for what you think was the best. If you think I left something really important off my list, post it in the comments and we can add it to the poll if it's deemed worthy. I can almost guarantee you won't like all my suggestions, but narrowing down these lists is tough.

Now that we've got that out of the way, let's get onto the first poll - the best comeback of the first half of 2013. While there hasn't been a surefire crazy comeback in MMA so far this year like Kongo and Barry last year, there have been a few pretty good ones. So let's check em out.

You can still vote for Best Submission here and Best Celebration here.

Here we go, in no particular order:

Antonio Silva defeats Alistair Overeem, UFC 156 - Overeem wasn't totally dominating, but he definitely took the first two rounds. Suddenly in the third, Silva opened up a can of whoop ass and knocked Overeem out to the delight of the crowd.

Michelle Waterson submits Jessica Penne, Invicta FC 5 - Waterson was stuck in an armbar in the third round of a back-and-forth fight, but got out of it and finished the fight with her own armbar in the fourth.

James Te Huna beats Ryan Jimmo, UFC on Fuel 7 - Jimmo flattened JTH with a head kick early in the fight that would have finished almost anyone. Te Huna held on though, and took the next two rounds with wrestling and ground and pound to score the comeback victory.

Demetrious Johnson beats John Dodson, UFC on Fox 6 - After getting knocked down twice in the second round and dealing with a very close third, the champ turned it up and took the last two rounds to grab a unanimous decision.

Bobby Green submits Jacob Volkmann, UFC 156 - Green had his back taken in the first and was nearly choked out, but he came back to survive a brutal standup call by Kim Winslow and eventually choked out Volkmann late in the third.

Tom Watson knocks out Stanislav Nedkov, UFC on Fuel 7 - Nedkov had him out on his feet and nearly finished him a few times, but Watson came back and blasted Nedkov again and again until he finally went down.

Ronda Rousey submits Liz Carmouche, UFC 157 - Rousey wasn't really in a ton of danger, but Carmouche did take her back and look for a choke. Rousey stayed patient and survived, then got her patented armbar finish late in the round.

Cat Zingano stops Miesha Tate, TUF 17 Finale - After definitely losing the first and probably losing the second round, Zingano came out in the third and stopped Tate with a brutal assault that included some insane knees.
