Adrien Broner def. Paulie Malignaggi by split decision (115-113, 113-115, 117-111)
The trash talk leading into tonight's Adrien Broner vs. Paulie Malignaggi main event didn't stop once the bell rang and ended up generating a very emotionally charged fight. Throughout the fight, Broner and Malignaggi continued their war of words, exchanging mid-fight verbal spars almost as much as they exchanged punches.
In the end, the fight played out as Malignaggi's speed and volume vs. Broner's defense and power. Early on, Malignaggi kept up a furious pace, landing numerous shots. While he amassed a high volume of punches, the veteran never seemed to hurt Broner. In round 3, Broner turned up the heat, throwing with serious power. For the rest of the fight, Broner was landing shots less frequently than Malignaggi, but was consistently landing the harder shots. Malignaggi came back late in the fight, but not enough to take the win. The fight was a bit awkward at times, with some questionable shots (mostly from Broner), but was indeed entertaining.
Post-fight, the two men at first seemed to bury the hatchet, but when Broner began insulting Paulie again post-fight, tempers flared and a post-fight pull apart nearly ensued. Malignaggi ended up accusing the judge who scored the fight 117-111 of being in Broner's pocket, and came very close to calling the fight a fix, though pulled back from truly making that accusation. For his part, Broner said he's planning to let the fans pick his next fight. Definitely a charged atmosphere all night, and it culminated in an ugly scene here at the end.
