Talent comes in all shapes and sizes, and knows no bounds. While I love to spend time watching a lot of the smaller, quicker grapplers wage war, I also enjoy watching the elite heavyweight grapplers display their skills.
At the 2013 IBJFF World Championships, Xande Ribeiro and Ricardo ‘Pezo’ Oliveira met one another during the black belt tournament in their weight class - although I believe the best match was Buchecha vs. Faria -
What followed was a fantastic display of skill and dominance from of the parties involved.
It goes to show that no matter how big or small you are, if you can grapple, then you are to be feared amongst your competitors.
Xande Dominates In Convincing Fashion
Xande had a clear game plan heading into this match: sprawl and stay heavy in the hips. No matter how aggressive Pezo Oliveira was in this match, the common factor remained the same: Xande was going to stuff any potential takedown at all costs.
Utilizing his long limbs, Xande was able to keep a safe distance, while allowing himself to pressure Pezo, and not allow him to get comfortable. When you compound that with his heavy hips and sprawling, things were shaping up very nicely for Ribeiro, and Pezo seemed to know it.
Just because he could, Xande landed a beautiful throw, that send Pezo crashing to the mat and out of bounds. After a reset, Xande continued his dominant sprawl game, until he was able to get into side control, and eventually was able to turtle Pezo up.
You can almost see the thought process of Xande play out from here; wait…wait…wait…BOOM!
The opportunity presented itself, and Xande locks on a beautiful guillotine choke to secure the hard earned victory. This was a flat out dominating showing from Riberio, as the writing was on the wall from the get go.
The Many Talents of Xande Ribeiro
Xande is a highly regarded name in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community. With experience all across the globe, he is sought out by many to help them improve their game.
However, despite being known for his grappling skills, Xande also has crossed over into the world of Mixed Martial Arts. With just two professional fights to his name, he won both in a fashion one would expect of an elite BJJ black belt: Knockout & TKO.
The skills are vast an lethal when talking about Xande. The fact he can knock someone out with ease is scary, however he is best known for what he can do while wearing a Gi.
