What: UFC 161 "Evans vs. Henderson" live pay-per-view results
Who: Stipe Miocic vs. Roy Nelson division
Where: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
When: June 15, 2013
Nelson actually came out in fine form. He seemed to move a step quicker than usual, his punches were tighter, he kept his hands up with sound defense, he faked a takedown and came back up high with punches, and even threw an outside low kick. That made it all the more impressive when Miocic coolly dodged or deflected the incoming leather, started to bob Nelson's head back with lightning-fast jabs, caused him to stumble with a few crippling right hands and, finally, cornered him on the fence and triggered off a nasty succession of standing forearms to the face.
The former D1 wrestler and Golden Gloves champ continued that 1st-round generalship throughout the entire fight, and rolled out some sweet tricks in the process: he smoothly bobbed under Nelson's haymakers and rotated back around with precise and powerful left hooks, he backed him up with smooth boxing combinations, planted an upward knee in Roy's face when he kept dropping his head, and chopped at his legs with a kick from the clinch.
All three rounds were owned by Miocic and it wasn't even close.
Roy did some uncharacteristic things as well: during Miocic's flurry of horizontal elbows against the fence, he just held his right arm at his waist instead of blocking the shots (or even attempting to), he seemed to empty his gas tank early, as he reverted to charging forward with wild overhands after Miocic's initial surge, and showed a little frustration by raising his hands in dismay when Stipe was uninterested in wading straight into his wheelhouse.
