Pierson made good use of his combination of Greco-Roman wrestling and sharp boxing to stifle most of Robertson's takedown attempts in the 1st round. Pierson, a southpaw, plied a feisty defensive clinch game to spend a good chunk of the round stalking Robertson while slicing in with straight left hands and uppercuts. Robertson was reversed on a sloppy takedown attempt and Pierson ended up on top, then spent some time in north-south. The 2nd round saw much of the same, with Pierson landing the cleaner strikes and scoring with a nice left high kick. Robertson was, however, able to implement his wrestling game late in the round, but couldn't make up for Pierson's earlier efforts.
It got interesting in the 3rd round: Robertson clocked Pierson with a clean standing elbow that put the Canadian on roller-skates briefly. Robertson went on the attack as Pierson cleared out the cobwebs -- he regained his wits but couldn't regain control of the fight, as Robertson battered him on the feet, causing Pierson to drop for a takedown. That decision proved wise, as he was able to avoid being finished and ride out the round.
- The judges saw it 29-28 twice and 28-28 for Sean Pierson, who defeats Kenny Robertson by majority decision.
I respect the judge who had the balls to score the 3rd round 10-8, because that's how I personally scored the fight. The level of dominance that Robertson exhibited in the 3rd was vastly superior to that of Pierson's in the 1st and 2nd rounds. How did you score the 3rd round? Let us know in the poll below.
