Roland Delorme vs. Edwin Figueroa -- Bantamweight bout

Delorme and Figueroa tore into each other from bell to bell in what unfolded as an entertaining brawl. Delorme started out by hitting a trip and taking the back, and was almost forced back into guard but recomposed back mount. Delorme pursued a rear-naked choke and then transitioned to a tight triangle with some elbows to the dome for good measure.

Figueroa finally escaped with a little over three minutes left and managed to posture up for some momentum-changing ground and pound. Delorme countered by attacking with a leg lock and using it to sweep into Figueroa's guard, where he quickly passed to side mount and eventually regained back mount. Delorme locked in a tight body triangle with Figueroa's right arm trapped inside and enjoyed the two-one-one luxuries of back control. Figueroa hung in tough and escaped nicely but the round belonged to Delorme.

In the 2nd round, Delorme hit an early takedown and seemed to be controlling things from the top until Figueroa, quite dramatically, slung a leg over Delorme's shoulder and cinched a tight triangle. Delorme sat up and started to slip his head out, which triggered an impressive transition to the armbar from Figueroa. The roles had completely reversed with Figueroa chaining sub attempts and Delorme using grit and technique to escape. Though out of imminent submission danger, Figueroa stayed on top until the 30-second mark when Delorme reversed position and once again hopped onto Figueroa's back. Despite the comeback, Figueroa had controlled over three minutes of the round to square things up.

Delorme's remarkable knack for attaining back control kicked into action to start the 3rd. Figueroa stayed slippery and broke loose, then really started to implement his striking advantage, landing clinch knees, a nice combo that closed with a clean left hook, and a lead uppercut, all of which found the mark. Delorme hit a defensive takedown to avoid more leather and -- you guessed it -- took Figueroa's back. Delorme under-hooked Figueroa's support arm and tried to roll into full mount, but Figueroa slid out of the underhook and freed his hands enough to clobber Delorme with a few big right hands, then a steady stream of more to close out the round while Delorme turtled up with a desperation single-leg attempt.

  • All three judges saw the match 29-28 for Roland Delorme, who defeats a very valiant Edwin Figueroa by unanimous decision.

This was actually one hell of a fight, and Figueroa's name has to start making appearances on the Biggest Heart and Toughest Fighters lists. I gave the 2nd and 3rd to Figueroa, so it will be interesting to see how the judges rendered each round score. In fact, I'll update this piece with that information when it's available.
