The UFC returns to Toronto, Ontario on September 21st, and light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (18-1) will defend his title against Alexander Gustafsson (15-1) at UFC 165. Dana White, who had previously tweeted the fight would happen, confirmed the location today in the UFC 161 media scrum:
Dana: Jones vs Gustafsson is going down in Toronto in September.— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) June 13, 2013
Jones' last showing in Canada came on September 22nd, when he submitted Vitor Belfort via americana in the 4th round. Belfort nearly pulled off a stunning upset after locking in a tight armbar in the opening round. Bones' other Toronto title defense saw him submit Lyoto Machida to the point of unconsciousness at UFC 140.
Gustafsson has won 6 straight fights, including a unanimous decision win over Mauricio Rua at UFC on Fox 5 in Seattle. The 26-year-old Swede's only loss in his career came by submission against Phil Davis at UFC 112, which was then just the 2nd UFC fight for both men. If Gustafsson has one thing he can claim that Jon Jones can't, it's that he defeated Matt Hamill.
UFC 165 will take place at the Air Canada Centre, where the UFC has held their last two Toronto shows.
