Antonio Silva seeks medical clearance for light heavyweight drop

Bruce Kluckhohn-US PRESSWIRE

When heavyweight Antonio 'Bigfoot' Silva issued a challenge to Thiago Silva after UFC on Fuel 10, many assumed it would be at heavyweight or not at all. Bigfoot, however is intent on making the fight, whatever the cost.

It's official, Antonio Silva has an axe to grind. We knew something was up when Bigfoot decided to call out Thiago Silva immediately following Thiago's win over Rafael Cavalcante at UFC on Fuel TV 10. After Thiago stated that he would gladly fight Antonio, but only at light heavyweight, most assumed the idea was dead in the water. Bigfoot, however, has breathed new life into the idea and, when talking to Fighters Only, given his take on Thiago's proposed conditions for the fight.

I thought he was a coward. Many fighters perform at different weight classes, for example Anderson Silva and Dan Henderson. I personally will attend the doctors to see if I am able to lose weight without spoiling my health. If can do it, I will drop weight to make this fight for sure.

It's worth noting at this point that Antonio Silva is one of the few fighters in the UFC who regularly cuts weight to make the 265 lb. limit. The idea of him dropping as much as 70 or 80 lbs to make this fight happen isn't just far fetched, it's practically impossible. Antonio offered a little insight into his feelings, however, and why he's doing everything he can to make the fight happen.

I had so much respect and consideration for him at one time. Besides being a good training partner, I had him as a friend. When he had a problem at ATT, I was the only one who was on his side until the end.

I used to visit his house and he did mine, I was something of a brother to him and he simply stabbed me in the back and cheated me. He said I’m upset because he left ATT, but he knows its not because of that why I’m mad.

All I want to do is just fight him because words won’t make him change. He’s mentally sick, we’re completely different people. I am a family guy - I respect my father, mother, wife, I treat my friends well, without pulling their legs*, and I don’t take drugs.

Whatever the root of their feud it appears to have gotten pretty far under Bigfoot's skin for him to even consider making the light heavyweight drop, let alone try and get medical clearance. I'm sure this won't be the last we'll hear of this from either fighter, maybe the UFC will even bring in Mike Dolce to give Antonio a hand with the cut. Maybe the two could agree to a catchweight bout at 220, stranger things have happened.
