While it may not be the game everyone's been waiting for, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has launched a new MMA themed flash game, available for free on their website, starring Jake Shields, Georgi Karakhanyan, and Aaron Simpson. Players can get the full 8-bit Kung-Fu experience playing as a reasonably famous MMA fighter, while 'bashing through waves of scummy animal experimenters and freeing animals from painful laboratory tests.'
And don't mistake the complete lack of grappling, wrestling, or Muay Thai to mean that this isn't really MMA. Depending on how well you clear each level you'll unlock secret goodies like interviews with your selected fighter, or use built in features to write letters to stop animal cruelty or sign petitions. If that's not enough, hardcore gamers can also increase the difficulty by entering the super-secret code "tempehrun," to add a whole new level of intensity to the game.
As featured MMA personality Arianny Celeste (appearing in game as "Cheerleader Arianny") says:
"The PETA video game is an absolutely incredible, innovative, unique way to reach people that might not be aware of the cruelty that these animals endure," says Celeste, who also discusses the new PETA Latino in her interview. "Gamers that probably wouldn't go to the PETA website are now becoming aware of things that are happening every day."
There's a lot to like and dislike about PETA's message, including a whole range actions that move to sacrifice one social issue in the name of another, but I think we can all agree this is at least more tasteful than past entries. Check it out if you're into saving animals or have always wanted to be Jake Shields, but just didn't want to fight like him.
