BECW6: Ye Olde Draft Recap + S6E1 Recap

Gentlemen,

My sincere apologies for the tardiness of this recap. I've been battling a nasty flu as well as internet issues for the past week and with the spreadsheet not yet set up for Season 6, I couldn't ask someone else to do it. Hopefully the content somewhat makes up for the wait.

Without further ado, let's dive into the details of the Season 6 draft. The 12 captains were provided with a cheat sheet and just a couple of days to get set, so few actually worked out a draft order, preferring to wing it and hope for the best. Leonard Garcia-esque in their givings of fuck they were, Joe, and as such there is no consensus draft score with which I can compare the actual draft picks to. Instead, the following is a breakdown of every team using data from the cheat sheet.

Table legend
# of events: Total number of events picked on PG, BECW or not
# of seasons: Number of complete BECW seasons picked
Avg. rank: Average points rank in the completed seasons
Acc. deviation: Accumulated deviation from the average. If an event average is 53.7 and a player scores 50 points, their deviation is -3.7. The accumulated deviation is the sum of deviations for all events picked
Avg. deviation: The above divided by the number of events
Acc. dev. rank: Rank of accumulated deviation
Avg. dev. rank: Rank of average deviation
Pick verdict: My totally biased, hopefully inflammatory, vaguely justified verdict

Not the best of drafts for everyone's favourite bureaucrat as Ron seemed to overvalue S5 performances. A heavy weight is on the shoulders of S5 scoring king sgiblin and alxn to carry the team while the BECW regulars picked in the 3rd-8th round will have to step up their performances. Relative newcomers Waffne and Laoldar are new enough to the BECW that their stats may not be indicative of their pickings skills and Swanson will hope they can up their game.

Not satisfied with his remarkably poor S5 draft, ScoreCard attempted to go one step further this time around. He must've confused swiftman with Subo as nothing else explains his decision to actually make a decent pick for once but the rare moment of clarity soon ended as ScoreCard opted for noted malcontent and bad luck charm sklart in the 2nd round followed by a bad malcontent with no charm in kreally. The baffling decisions continued as ScoreCard was seemingly more interested in building a team of kooky characters than people who can actually, y'know, pick.

The usually consistent team picker Newt had a bit of a head-scratcher towards the later rounds, going for experienced pickers with poor picking records over new blood. Newt does have by far the most experienced team, so perhaps he was going for a PistonHyundai-esque draft strategy?

Despite picking the 3rd most experienced player in phenylenginerods, Andy's team is the least experienced of all as a staggering four players have picked four events or less, most notably the 2nd round pick Hayabusa2000. It could all work out well if ubernerd Zane Simon can translate his knowledge of the latest Joe's BBQ & Fights: ENTER THE RIB CAGE! into cool points but conventional wisdom says they are destined for the Bland Prix

A solid mix of experienced pickers and promising newcomers, the only questionable decision Sugel made was picking T.C. Engel in the 6th round. Teecee is so forgettable that when he announced his decision to participate in this season, I pointed him to the wrong signup form thinking he had sat out last season. Congrats, TC, Brenda is you. It'll be interesting to see how BECW newcomer and MMA PG veteran pooki (not to be confused with Pookie Gnome) fares.

No rookies and a mix of all-round handsome mutherfukers for Greater Hall although there were no standout picks in the bunch. moll surely delights in the added pressure of being picked too soon while hot & cold pickers E-Mo and SS will have to put on their good picking hats if the Beauties are to have a chance of replicating Bob Sapp's legendary GP run.
