Watching the behind the scenes footage of an event that featured Lyoto Machida, his father had a quote that I’m going to loosely paraphrase, in that you are your own biggest opponent…the toughest thing in the day is to make yourself get up and train. I can say the hardest thing in the morning is to wake up from my comfy bed and force myself to go do some roadwork. The hardest thing is to push yourself to run that extra half mile when no one is making you. Or to have 10 seconds left in a round and to give everything you have despite burning lungs and muscles begging you to quit. I’ve seen several times in several eyes that don’t want to push themselves, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But there is a spark in the eyes’ of those that will not quit. Something special, something very admirable and should light a spark in everyone around those eyes. What creates that drive? What makes you push yourself when no one is watching? What makes you try harder even if you or others don’t think it will pay off at the end? What makes you tick?
I’ve always had a chip on my shoulder, but I’ve always been very competitive. Even if it isn’t against an opponent, I’ll always try to outdo myself just for the sake of competition. Aside from that, I know what makes me tick. It’s that want. That want to show others what you can do. That want to say that you did what others were unwilling to do. That want to make others want to try harder. The want to make myself better. Even more than that, I want to show my Daughter what hard work can do. My Daughter would join me at the gym, and that burned something in me to not let her down. She makes me tick, she makes me want to sharpen everything that I do. Showing my friends and family and other training partners what I can do makes me tick. So what about you guys BE? What makes you tick?
I’ve seen some hit the gym for a release, either from a bad break up, unhappy about their jobs, or unhappy about their appearance. Regardless of the reason, I always smiled to see their determination. So what makes you guys and gals strive to want to train, or want to strive for more? What gets you out of bed to run? What keeps you going to the gym? What makes your blood pump and have the desire to keep pushing when all else is exhausted?
