UFC on FX 8 has quietly been hit with multiple lineup changes, but they've primarily affected the preliminary card. This one unfortunately has struck the night's co-main event, as middleweight contender Constantinos Philippou is out of his fight against Ronaldo Souza on May 18th in Santa Catarina, Brazil. MMA Fighting has more:
UFC on FX 8 has lost its co-main event, as middleweight contender Costa Philippou is out of his scheduled clash with Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza due to a facial cut.
No word just yet who, if anyone, will fight Souza on less than two weeks' notice.
Philippou has won 6 consecutive fights, including an upset win (on short notice) against Tim Boetsch at UFC 155. Jacare is a former Strikeforce MW champion who ended his tenure with the promotion by defeating Ed Herman (a short notice opponent) in January. Both men are ranked in the UFC's top 10 at 185 lbs.
This is a huge hit to the card, which was clearly focused on straightening out the middleweight title picture. With just two weeks to go before fight night, the UFC is faced with either likely giving Jacare a step down in competition or removing him from the show entirely.
UPDATE: Chris Camozzi, who himself was an injury replacement for C.B. Dollaway on this card, has agreed to fill in for Philippou. Camozzi was previously scheduled to face Rafael Natal on the main card. Natal will now face newcomer Joao Zeferino.
