UFC on Fox 8: John Moraga says Demetrious Johnson is boring

Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

UFC flyweight title challenger John Moraga isn't a huge fan of champion Demetrious Johnson's fighting style.

John Moraga might not be a name that casual UFC fans would immediately recognize, but they're about to see him in the main event of UFC on Fox 8 when he challenges Demetrious Johnson for the flyweight title. Moraga, who is 2-0 in the UFC and will make his first main card appearance against Mighty Mouse, has some stuff to say about the champ already though. In fact, he told MMA Junkie that he thought the champ was boring:

"He just bounces around. He runs around too much. He doesn't fight. He doesn't put on exciting fights. He's got a lot of technique and a lot of skill, but he doesn't finish people, I don't feel."

"I think he's boring."

He explained his surprise at getting a title shot so quickly, and described his feelings when Johnson pulled out of their original bout at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale with an injury:

"I was a bit surprised that it came so quick, but I was the only one that had two finishes in the division. I felt like I beat two decently ranked opponents, so I felt like it was possible. But I was a little bit surprised it came so quick.

"Still, I was confident I was going to be able to keep it. I just didn't really worry about it. I figured that would be the best way to go about it. I just trained hard, and I figured things would play out however they do."

He wasn't done with his assessments of DJ's game though:

"I don't think he's that fast. I think he has good timing."

"He has very good timing with his takedowns. I don't think he's the greatest wrestler, but he just has good timing, and good timing is key in MMA wrestling."

That's an interesting way to look at Johnson, one I hadn't really thought of. Does anyone agree with this? Or is Moraga just trying to hype the fight by being a critic?
