Thiago Silva has two NC's in his last three fights, and most recently was suspended for six months for testing positive for marijuana metabolites. He returns at UFC on Fuel 10 against the debuting Rafael Cavalcante (who is also coming off suspension), and shared his thoughts on marijuana in a recent interview with BJPenn.com. Basically he says that he'd like to smoke, but he can't because he can't afford to get suspended:
"You know, it's very complicated what to say about that. A lot of guys, they like to drink, you know; I don't drink, I like to smoke. I don't smoke any more, because I really can't, but I used to like a lot because it helps me to relax...it's not like a drug like everybody say. So actually, it's legal in California, you know. To be honest, I don't think it's fair, you know, because it doesn't change your performance."
There's not much to add to that, really. He shares the opinion of most - that it shouldn't be something that is tested for. Nonetheless, he is smart enough to know that are continuing to test for it, so he won't indulge because it might hurt his career. And considering his recent past, one more slip-up might mean the door for him.
