UFC on FX 8 kicked off with three bouts streamed live on Facebook, and each bout was entertaining. The first bout of the night took place in the lightweight division with Lucas Martin and Jeremy Larsen engaging in a fun (albeit a tad sloppy) striking battle. Martins had his moments over the first two rounds, but Larsen kept the pressure on him and was landing the more damaging strikes. It seemed pretty clear that Martins needed a finish going into the third, and that's exactly what he got. Just 13 seconds into the round, he landed a brutal straight right that turned Larsen's lights out. The win was Martins' first in the UFC, and it came in highlight-reel fashion.
The second bout was a complete 180 from the first. Jussier Formiga dominated Chris Cariaso for two rounds with some excellent grappling, but barely threw a punch. After getting slick takedowns, Formiga was relentless with his guard passing and kept the pressure on Cariaso, but Cariaso showed that he had some great defensive BJJ as well by continually getting back to guard. Two brutal referee standups marred Formiga's work, but it was all his going into the third. Cariaso came on late and beat up Formiga over the final two minutes of the fight, but it was too little too late and Formiga took a unanimous decision with three 29-28 cards.
The final Facebook prelim was another flyweight fight with John Lineker meeting Azamat Gashimov. Right from the start, it was all Lineker. He dropped Gashimov with hard punches twice in the first round and deftly reversed a couple of takedown attempts from the Dagestani sambo practitioner. Early in the second, Linker landed a hard kick to the body, then followed it up with a right hook to the body that made me flinch. Gashimov crumpled to the mat and Lineker finished him off to get his second UFC win.
