Well Bloody Elbowans,
Today, on Mother's Day, my partner awoke to find her waters had broken. Looks like today is the day that my second son arrives fully into the world. My first son, Thor Sylvan, is pretty excited but at 4 years old, also overwhelmed, and is trying to karate-punch all the cushions in the house.
We live on Oahu, so in Hawai'ian tradition we are waiting on the final name choice until the boy is born. The front runners are Wanderlei, which is the portuguese version of Evander, which means "a good man." Also, I am a huge axe-murderer mark, of course, if any of you tell my lady that nickname it's all over for you as I will find you and duct tape you in the path of a roaming colony of army ants. We live on a ridge that gets wind from the Waianae coastal mountain range, so we are also considering the name Keanu, which means "cool breeze over the mountains" in Hawai'an and "douchey gen x pretty boy" in modern American parlance. We are gambling on the latter definition fading with age as his contemporaries grow up in a post-Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure/Matrix era. But being born in Hawai'i is a unique experience within this country- if you've never lived here, it's a different America than any you've experienced. We want him to have roots here. A guy like Brandon Starr will get this, I am sure. It's much more than dropping chaka's and getting the kama'aina discount.
Why am I telling you this? Well, this community is full of people I check in with every day. Listening to Wonderfulspam's turkish psych-pop, imagining forkboy's scottish brogue, wistfully enjoying my internet crush on mollcutpurse, and rooting for Nate Wilcox to finally get traction in the MMA Talking head game, or even resisting the urge to argue with Chris Groves over what is or is not a good movie; you guys are a big part of my daily routine. Don't think if I didn't mention you I don't know you.
So I wanted to take the time to share with you that I am going to be heading in to Queen's hospital in Honolulu in the next couple of hours. The boy was measured in the womb yesterday at 9 lbs' 4 ozs, so it's gonna be a biggun. I am gonna have a new son, and everything is gonna be awesome.
