Invicta FC 5 - Post-postfight Main Card Musings

  • I wrote an entire Fanpost talking about how I felt Penne lacked motivation. And I stand by that speculative notion. Off the top of my head I can't think of anyone more explosive on the ground than Michelle Waterson, excluding Ronda Rousey. So, I'm not taking this victory away from Michelle, but Penne defeated herself in my opinion.
  • I don't like Championship fights before the "ranking ladder" is a little more structured based on what the fighter has done. With the shallow weight class, and if Champions want to keep fighting, non-title fights are a good idea. If the Champion wins, great. The fans get to see them in action. If they lose, great. Now you have your next challenge, all the while, putting on other fights in that weight, developing contenders.
  • Barb Honchak was crowned Invicta FC's first ever Flyweight champion with a unanimous decision victory over Vanessa Porto. Both fighters were tentative and engaged in a striking battle for almost the entirety of the fight. Both specialize on the ground, and reminded me of the Jacare/Tim Kennedy fight.
  • Instead of taking the fight to their strength as well as their opponents, Honchak and Porto, opted to out strike each other. Personally, I felt this Flyweight title was premature. Honchak and Porto both could have fought someone else before this, unless they figured out something with Bellator so they can get the top 125ers. Not to mention two of the top 5 Flyweights, Rosi Sexton and Sheila Gaff, moving to 135 to fight in the UFC.
  • Muxlow couldn't handle Coenen's striking. So, it wasn't surprising at all that Cyborg flat out destroyed her and got a mercy stoppage. Kim Winslow stay away (Cyborg/Jan Finney still fresh in my mind). King Mo's "ows" and "ohs" during the fight were pretty hilarious though.
  • I've said this before and I'll say it again. Cyborg's toughest challenge at 145 are the athletic commissions. I am looking forward to the Marloes Coenen rematch at Invicta 6 though.
  • A Tito Ortiz sighting on Team Cyborg
  • Leslie Smith should and deserves to be one the fighters booked when the UFC announces its next WMMA fight. She lost a fight of the night split decision (I scored rounds 1 and 2 for Smith), but I think her and Alexis Davis at this point would give Ronda her toughest fight.
  • Smith is the only fighter that could pressure Ronda and hold her own on the ground I feel. Miesha Tate doesn't have the striking to worry Ronda. Ditto for Alexis. Kaufman's not getting a shot at Ronda for a while, I think.
  • Kaufman's game is so simple, but it works. Quick 1-2's while moving her head out of the way.
  • It'll be interesting to see how Invicta moves forward with the UFC gobbling up the top 135 talent.
  • Former Bellator Champion Zoila Gurgel engaged in a cage-clinch battle with Jennifer Maia. This fight was decided by Zoila's inability to get her back off the cage and Maia's small but effective bursts of strikes.
  • Kaitlin Young is one of my favorite fighters. But, she has shown little to know improvement since the Elite XC days. She has serious trouble dealing with a mix of takedowns and striking, and is very predictable. Still, one of the best offensive fighters, but her refusal to mix things up (standing and when on the ground, when she's on the ground, she fights like she has to get a submission only).
  • Lauren Taylor is what all top game fighters should be like if they're not going to try and pass. Constantly working, kind of reminded me of Chael Sonnen's game. Her willingness to strike with Kaitlin made her night a little tougher than need be.
  • It pains me to say it, but Kaitlin's inability to fight any fight that isn't one dimensional or her dictaticing the action completely makes her a predictable kick-boxer in a Mixed Martial Arts contest.
  • Actually, a fight between Kaitlin Young and Zoila Gurgel would intrigue me. 135 lbs or 130lbs, I'm not sure if Kaitlin could make 125, while Zoila has fought at 135lbs.
  • Julia Budd got takedown after takedown. Other than ending up on the bottom after a botched armbar attempt, she was dominant. Eventually getting a no-hooks in rear naked choke. Ediane Gomes seems like a good next fight, the winner fighting the winner of Cyborg/Coenen. One thing we haven't seen Cyborg fight is someone who will constantly pursue the takedown.
  • If Budd doesn't mind waiting, I think she deserves to be the first to fight Cyborg/Coenen.
  • In the opening bout of the main card Bec Hyatt obliterated Jasminka Cive in their grudge match. Jasminka did not look impressive at all. Both fighters came into this fight with Bec being the only one to have defeated a figher who has ONE MMA win on their record. Bec got a slam takedown, moved to mount, and did whatever she wanted, eventually transitioning to the armbar and get the tap.
