UFC fighter rankings: UFC on Fuel 9 leads to little change

Scott Cunningham

It's not all that surprising that last weekend's UFC on Fuel 9 event didn't cause much of a disturbance in the official UFC fighter rankings.

If the UFC on Fuel 9 main event fight between Alexander Gustafsson and Gegard Mousasi had actually happened, we might be talking about some changes at light heavyweight in the UFC's official rankings right now. But it didn't. Instead, Mousasi picked up a win over late replacement Ilir Latifi that did nothing to change his ranking. He still sits in the 10 slot at 205, while Gustafsson remains at two.

The only other fight that featured ranked fighters was the bantamweight bout between Mike Easton and Brad Pickett, but Pickett's win didn't push him up the standings at all. In fact, Easton didn't move either. Pickett remained at 5, while Easton stayed at 8.

So what did change? A few things. The rankings added a few new people to the panel, including Bloody Elbow's T.P. Grant and Fraser Coffeen. This led to some minor variations in a few divisions. In the middleweight division, two changes to the last rankings update were basically undone as Luke Rockhold moved back to number five, which dropped Constantinos Philippou to six. And Ronaldo Souza reclaimed the eight spot, which dropped Chael Sonnen back to nine.

There were three others. Rashad Evans moved up to six at light heavyweight, while Mauricio Rua dropped to seven. And at heavyweight, Alistair Overeem moved up to five with Frank Mir dropping to six, while Roy Nelson moved up to seven and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fell to eight.

In other words, very little of note came out of the Sweden event. I can't imagine a big mixup after The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale this weekend either, but UFC on Fox 7 and UFC 159 should provide some rankings excitement at least.
