I don't know what to say. This fight was in my mind going to be spectacular, and don't get me wrong it wasn't awful...
But, I thought it was sloppy as hell. Two girls, who relied more on their flexibility to reverse/get out of bad positions. Terrible base. I don't know. I'm going to be saying that a lot. Position over submission.
The finish was so anti climatic. Jessica... Jessica Penne. I don't know her at all personally, but from interviews and such I've seen of her she didn't want this, "THE TITLE", as badly as Waterson. She came in lethargic, and kept a lethargic Forrest Griffin vs Tito Ortiz 3 type pace. And easily would have won a 3 round decision.
MIchelle got the armbar in the 4th and Penne just took it. I saw no scramble, no last ditch effort. Man, I even found it weird that Michelle waited forever before she tried the armbar escape. But, back to Penne. She obviously immediately tapped, so it was probably locked in super tightly, but still. I don't know.
Lacking desire in anything you do is a bad idea. And especially terrible for fighting, I mean even going to a simple sparring/training session unmotivated, I've seen myself get lit up. She didn't want it. She didn't want to be in the cage tonight. Something was going wrong. An injury, a family matter, ex boyfriend. I don't know.
Penne reminded me of Miesha Tate fresh off a devastating and emotional loss to Ronda Rousey, getting armbarred to death. She returned to fight a little to soon, looking out of it, against Julie Kedzie. She won in the end, but it was a half-ass performance on her part, despite it being very entertaining. And when I say half-ass, I mean Miesha was not have the mental mindset to fight.
Where am I going with this? I don't know. I think Penne should reconsider if she really wants to this. From watching this fight, it really made me think of my own experiences and situations, where i went on by just natural talent, half-assing whatever. I probably sound like a lunatic, but I feel her struggle. She doesn't know why she's doing this.
I hope any fighters out there, who don't know why they fighting to reevaluate. Clearly, Penne has talent. She has natural gifts other people don't have (long limbs for her weight class, flexibility). i hope she rediscovers her fire, the way I believe Miesha will against Cat Zingano.
Miesha Tate vs Julie Kedzie and Jessica Penne vs Michelle Waterson are great examples of watching a fight, where one fighter is a better fighter than the other (Tate, Penne), but a lack of desire and want is making it a closer fight than it should. I'm all for excitement, but nothing pains me more... then watching someone who doesn't want to really fight, FIGHT.
