Diego Sanchez might have barely scraped by Takanori Gomi at UFC on Fuel 8 earlier this year, but he thinks that should earn him a top opponent in his next bout. According to Sanchez (24-5) he'll be making his return to the octagon at UFC 164, which is scheduled for August 31st in the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, WI. Sanchez explained the deal to MMA Junkie:
"I talked to Joe Silva yesterday, and he penciled me in for Aug. 31. We're looking at opponents. I did like I always do and said, 'Look, you're the man, Joe. You're the one who makes all these big matchups. And I'm, in my opinion, in the most stacked division in the UFC, and there are plenty of great fights out there, and you'll hook me up with a good scrap.'"
He said that he'd like to fight Pat Healy, Josh Thomson, Gilbert Melendez, Nate Diaz, Joe Lauzon or Jamie Varner. There are probably others in the running as well, such as Jorge Masvidal or Edson Barboza. No matter who it turns out to be (my money's on Varner), it should be an entertaining main card scrap.
