Amir Khan defeats Julio Diaz by unanimous decision (114-113, 115-112, 115-113)
Amir Khan scored a much needed win today in Sheffield, England, but it definitely was not the fight he needed. Facing the 40-6-1 Julio Diaz, Khan was expected to roll on his way to a win. Instead, he was pushed and pushed hard. Diaz had to survive both a 4th round knockdown and a late surge by Diaz to take home a razor close decision win.
It wasn't long ago that Khan was considered a potential future great of boxing. However, he suffered back to back losses in 2011/2012, first to Lamont Peterson and then in an early KO to Danny Garcia. He's had one win since over the inexperienced Carlos Molina. This fight was intended to be another on his comeback trail, showing improvements in his game. Instead, it showed that he still has a lot of work to do in order to close those gaps that have become increasingly damaging in recent fights.
That said, this was definitely a fun fight. Showtime will be airing it on tape delay later tonight after the Danny Garcia vs. Zab Judah card ends. It's definitely worth a look at that time.
