After a long fought war of words, Light Heavyweights Phil Davis and Vinny Magalhaes stepped into the cage to finally settle their differences at UFC 159. Davis was more than capable of keeping the fight standing and outpointed Vinny on the feet to win the unanimous decision.
Vinny showed a kick heavy striking game to start out the fight. They tied up, but Phil pushed Magalhaes off. More kicks came from Vinny, but Davis not taking the takedown bait. High kick from Davis rocked Vinny, but the Brazillian was able to recover. Vinny caught a low kick from DAvis and jumped on his back. He looked for the arm, but Phil escaped. Magalhaes slowed down and mostly abandoned his kicks. Eyepoke from Davis, but the referee tells them to keep fighting. Phil consistently throwing 1-2's and Vinny mostly just eating them from through his guard.
Davis tried to set the tone with his jab early in the second, but Vinny countered with a flurry. Phil ducked under a punch from Vinny and scored a takedown from back clinch. Vinny spun to guard and Phil stood up rather than engage on the ground. Magalhaes obviously frustrated on the feet, constantly eating straight punches from his opponent. Vinny looked worn and gassed by the end of the round.
The last round looked much like the previous one. Phil stalked Vinny landing jabs and straight rights confident that Vinny couldn't take him down. Any time Vinny returned fire, Phil backed out of range then reset to get back into jabbing range.
Phil Davis took a unanimous decision (30-27 x 2, 29-28) over Vinny Magalhaes
