After being suspended for making inflammatory public comments regarding his stance on transgender fighter, Fallon Fox, UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione now has UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones to contend with.
Mitrione was fined and suspended for comments made regarding Fox while appearing on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, but was booked just 16 days later to return against Brendan Schaub at UFC on FOX 8 in July. While speaking to media in New York Thursday, Jones slammed Mitrione, calling him a 'scumbag.'
"I think he's terrible for that. It's ridiculous. I think that Fallon Fox, that's a strong person. What the person has been through in their life, that's a strong person. I'm a fan of that person because of what they've gone through and what they're willing to go through. He's a scumbag. I don't care if he never fights again. He's a ridiculous person."
Now, Mitrione has in turn responded to Jones, saying via Twitter:
Last time I spoke, gotNtrouble4 talking bout sum1 using hands2hurt women, guess thats a lot better than Bentleys&Telephone poles ... Ur a spoiled brat that needs 2b taught a lesson & I'm the guy2do it. Come fight me at hvywgt within 1 year or ur a coward, kid @JonnyBones

Mitrione seems to be alluding to a Jun. 2012 incident where Jones received a six-month suspension of his license and a fine of $1000 after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated. Jones reportedly crashed his $190K 2012 Bentley Continental GT into a telephone pole while accompanied by two female passengers.
Jones, who defends his light-heavyweight title to Chael Sonnen at UFC 159 Saturday night, has openly contemplated a move to heavyweight. However, during a fan chat with ESPN Tuesday, Jones stated a "[move to heavyweight definitely wouldn't be permanent. It would just be to prove critics wrong. I would seek an opponent in the Top 10." Could Mitrione be the catalyst Jones would need to take the plunge?
