UFC 159: Chael Sonnen would have sued Jon Jones for 'reckless' steroid accusations

MMA Fighting caught up with the Light Heavyweight contender to get his response to Jones' resent statement that he'd been taking steroids throughout his career.

The lead up to UFC 159 has been expectedly filled with quips and snide remarks from both headliners Light Heavyweight champ Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen. Aside from Chael's typical over-the-top bravado, the most interesting statement came when the champion accused Sonnen of abusing steroids throughout his entire MMA career on last week's UFC Tonight. Jones has since apologized for the accusation and explained that he had simply heard the rumor through the grapevine.

At Thursday's UFC 159 media day, Ariel Helwani caught up with Chael to get his reaction to Jones' dubious claim:

I think somebody probably told him he should take it back. My side would have got to him; we would have sued him. We would have just said, "Prove it. That's a pretty good accusation. Where's your evidence?"

Yeah (I still think he's a good guy). He took it back. I haven't accepted his apology, but I acknowledge he did give an apology. I don't know why he would say that. I was very disappointed. That was a a very reckless statement.I don't wish to engage or out him for something. It wasn't true and I resent it.

With that controversy out of the way, Sonnen and Jones are set to fight on Saturday night. The event takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ with the main card starting at 10 pm ET (7 pm PT).
