Canelo Alvarez def. Austin Trout by unanimous decision (115-112, 116-111, 118-109)

Two undefeated champions met in a key fight here, and it was Canelo Alvarez who walked away with the win in a very good fight. Both men gave it their all in an entertaining back and forth battle. The fight largely came down to Trout's aggression and higher volume attack vs. Canelo's single power shots. The biggest moment of the fight came in the opening seconds of round 7, where Canelo dropped Trout with a straight right for the only knockdown of the fight and the first knockdown of Trout's career.

As seems to always be the case with boxing, controversy was present thanks to the judges' scoring. With this fight taking place in Texas, there was a fear that the judging would be poor, and that's exactly what happened. While I had Canelo winning the fight myself, some of the scores, particularly after round 8, were ridiculous. This was a very close fight - much closer than 118-109 indicates. It's boxing, and it's Texas, so yes, we should have seen it coming, but that still doesn't make it OK.

Setting the judging aside, this was a great fight, with Canelo showing that he can indeed triumph against a very tough opponent, but at the same time looking human and like a fighter still with room to grow.

In the opening fight on the Showtime broadcast, Omar Figueroa did not take long to take out Abner Cotto. In this battle of undefeated fighters, it is Fugueroa who leaves with his 0 intact. The end came in the 1st round, as Figueroa took control early, then ended the show with a great left hook to the body while Cotto was trapped in the corner.
