Bloody Elbow is the premier MMA community, and it is because every single user brings something to the table whether in the form of humerous banter or expert knowledge in a one of the martial arts. Being a huge fight fan, i believe this is my contribution to the BE community. LATE NIGHT FIGHTS as a series was created in order to highlight great classics and those fights that are often cited but rarely seen as well as the past, present and future legends of MMA in their early non UFC or non MMA bouts. - KJJ.
Well welcome to an early morning edition of LNF. For those of you who don't have a clue, this is an extremely irregularly scheduled look at old fights from future stars, or fights that often are misrepresented by fans. Today we look at a golden oldie, the fight in which Josh Barnett strikes gold. Many have heard of this fight but few have seen it, so without further ado lets get it on!
The Challenger: Josh Barnett (12-1)
Key Loses: Pedro Rizzo
Interesting Fact: Josh entered the UFC after winning 3 fights in one night against Juna Tuhkassari, Bobby Hoffman and John Marsh. Marsh was 6-0 at the time, had just heel hooked Travis Fulton, and would eventually become fodder for IFL'er and future UFC washout Chad Griggs.
The Champion: Randy Couture (10-3)
Key Losses: Enson Inoue
Interesting Fact: Randy's first fight was in the semis of the UFC 13 heavyweight tourney against Tony Halme who was 3-5, on a 5 fight losing streak and hadn't won since 1994.
This card also included:
- Matt Hughes beating Mach Sakurai for the title.
- Pedro Rizzo knocking out a young Andrei Arlovski
- Matt Lindland beating Pat Miletich
- Evan Tanner beating Elvis Sinosic
- Frank Mir tapping Pete Williams with a shoulder lock (#39 greatest sub of all time).
- Future champs Matt Serra and Sean Sherk winning by triangle and decision respectively. I didnt expect this list to get so long, but every single fight on the card had a champ, previous champ or future champ on it. Unheard of.

Some interesting takeaways here. Randy really looked solid through the first round and a half. He clearly took round 1 and was well on his way to a 20-18 mark until Barnett turned the tide. Secondly, Josh Barnett is a big strong dude. When he got his opportunity he took it and made Randy pay, pummeling him with punches and elbows until the ref saved Couture.
Until next time fight fans!
