Tension is brewing for the upcoming UFC 160 fight card, as a potential title shot has been laid on the line for main card lightweights Gray Maynard and T.J. Grant. ESPN's Brett Okamoto made the announcement via twitter following UFC on Fox 7: Henderson vs. Melendez.
Dana White confirms: The winner between Gray Maynard and T.J. Grant will fight for the title.— Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) April 21, 2013
Maynard is most notable for his two fight classic series against Frankie Edgar, and enters the fight on the heels of a strange split decision victory over current featherweight Clay Guida. For his part Grant has looked powerful and dominant since dropping from welterweight in 2011 and will step into his fight against Maynard riding a four fight win streak and an especially brutal KO of Matt Wiman.
It's worth noting that Jose Aldo has been promised a shot at the lightweight title as well, if he can get past Anthony Pettis. And there are certainly plenty of fans clamoring for a rematch between Benson Henderson and Gilbert Melendez following tonight's hard fought but indecisive title fight. That's not to say that the Grant vs. Maynard winner wont get his shot, but he may find himself waiting in line if more profitable fights can be made sooner.
