UFC on Fox 7's main card is entirely comprised of UFC vs. Strikeforce matchups, and the opening bout between welterweights Jordan Mein (27-8 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and Matt Brown should be a good one. Mein is coming off a successful stoppage of Dan Miller at UFC 158, while Brown has won his last 4 fights.
Mein is replacing Dan Hardy, who was not given medical clearance to fight after he was diagnosed with a serious heart condition. The UFC on Fox 7 main card airs live on ... well ... Fox, at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT.
How do these two stack up?
Mein: 23 years old | 6'0" | 73" reach
Brown: 30 years old | 6'0" | 76" reach
What have these two done recently?
How did these two get here?
Jordan Mein is one of Canada's more promising welterweight prospects. He's competed in professional MMA since the age of 16 (!) and has already faced the likes of Rory MacDonald, Mike Ricci, Josh Burkman, Tyron Woodley, Evangelista Santos, and Joe Riggs. He's had his ups and downs throughout his career, but Mein has won 9 out of his last 10 fights, including a TKO stoppage of Dan Miller, marking the first time Miller had ever been finished. Mein won the fight but not without significant danger, as he defended a serious armbar attempt a few minutes before he turned on the jets and blasted Miller with strikes. Stopping Dan Miller is no easy feat, so if he can become the first man to KO or TKO Matt Brown, that would be a pretty good start to his UFC career.
Matt Brown was on the brink of a UFC release in 2011. "The Immortal" had lost 4 of 5 fights from 2010 to 2011, with all of his losses coming by submission. In a must-win situation against Chris Cope, Brown saved his job with a KO victory. From there the TUF 7 alum went on an undefeated run in 2012, capped off with an upset win over Mike Swick at UFC on Fox 5 in Seattle. Mein is arguably the best opponent he's faced in this stretch of fights, and if he can pull off another upset tonight he might see himself as more than just a gatekeeper at 170 lbs.
Why should you care?
Well it's a classic case of young prospect vs. tough veteran. Mein is the same age as Rory MacDonald and Brown has pulled off a career resurgence and still has never been knocked out in his MMA career. This is an improvement over the original Dan Hardy fight booking, and we could be in for a good one.
