UFC on Fox 7 fight card primer: Daniel Cormier vs. Frank Mir

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

Bloody Elbow presents their UFC on Fox 7 fight card primer, previewing all the action at this weekend's UFC card live on Fox. Here, we look at Frank Mir vs. Daniel Cormier.

In the co-main event at UFC on Fox 7, former UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir (16-6 MMA; 14-6 UFC) welcomes Strikeforce Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier (11-0 MMA; UFC Debut) to the Octagon. This 3 round Heavyweight fight is the 3rd of 4 main card fights. The official UFC rankings have Cormier ranked as the #3 contender, Mir at #6. UFC on Fox 7 airs live from San Jose, CA this Saturday, April 20, on Fox with the main card starting at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.

This is a fight that has been brewing for some time. When Cormier won the Strikeforce Grand Prix last year, it was announced that he would have one more Strikeforce Heavyweight fight. They eventually announced that fight as Cormier vs. Frank Mir, on loan to Strikeforce from the UFC. Cormier vs. Mir was to headline a November Strikeforce show, but when Mir went down with injury, the fight was cancelled. That show ended up not taking place and was one of the final steps in the demise of Strikeforce. The two now face off in a considerably more high profile fight on Fox.

Cormier: 34 years old | 5'10" | 71" reach

What have these two done recently?

Mir: L - Junior dos Santos (TKO) | W - Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Sub) | W - Roy Nelson (UD)
Cormier: W - Dion Staring (TKO) | W - Josh Barnett (UD) | W - Antonio Silva (KO)

How did these two get here?

Frank Mir is the former UC Heavyweight champion who has been doggedly on the trail of a second title for years now. After nearly having his career ended by a motorcycle accident in 2004, he's made an incredible comeback to the very highest levels of the division. But he seems unable to make that final step and reclaim the belt - every time he gets tantalizingly close, he loses. Mir is one of the best submission specialists in the history of the Heavyweight division, and in recent years he's vastly improved his striking as well. Champion or not, Frank Mir is a tough test for any fighter.

Not quite two years ago, Daniel Cormier was an alternate in the Strikeforce Grand Prix whose biggest win was against Jeff Monson. But when Alistair Overeem dropped out of the tournament, Cormier stepped in and immediately made the most of the situation, knocking out Bigfoot Silva and dominating Barnett to win it all. Cormier is a very skilled wrestler, with great credentials. He also has serious KO power in his hands. A teammate to UFC champ Cain Velasquez at AKA, Cormier is one of the Strikeforce fighters poised to make a huge mark in the UFC in 2013.

Why should you care?

I'm very excited to see Cormier in the UFC. A win here makes him an immediate contender, while a Mir win sets up a possible Mir vs. Velasquez title fight. Big things are on the line in what could be a brief but violent battle.
