2012 was a good year for Canelo Alvarez. The undefeated boxing phenom was a rising star when the year started - by the end, his name was being spoken alongside names like Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto. Canelo opened the year with his highest profile fight to date, defeating legend Shane Mosley in front of a huge Mayweather vs. Cotto crowd. Following that up with a headlining stint on Showtime, Canelo loudly proclaimed himself one of the fighters to watch in 2013.
Now, he's ready to make good on that declaration, as he takes on Austin Trout this Saturday April 20 live on Showtime. It's most definitely a tough fight, and one that has the potential to either continue Canelo's meteoric rise, or send it crashing back down to earth.
To prepare for Canelo vs. Trout, let's take a look back to the last time Saul Canelo Alvarez stepped into the ring. The date was September 15, 2012. Just as he will do this weekend, Canelo was headlining on Showtime. His opponent, the 30-4 Josesito Lopez. Both men were coming off big wins - Canelo over Mosely, Lopez over Victor Ortiz. Lopez was a game opponent, but there was never any doubt who the star of this particular show was.
