Coming out of Saturday's UFC On Fuel TV 9, Heavyweight Matt Mitrione was riding high off a quick KO win over Philip de Fries. He followed that up with an appearance on The MMA Hour, where he reeled off offensive comments regarding transgender fighter Fallon Fox. The incident caught Matt the first suspension from the UFC's newly minted code of conduct. He also got a response from Fox herself.
It’s one of those things that’s just a pain in the ass. First of all, he didn’t even need to be doing an interview. And I’m gonna talk to these guys. The only time these guys really need to be doing interviews is leading up to fights.
It's one of those things it's just a pain in the ass. He didn't even need to be doing an interview. The only time these guys need to be doing interviews is leading up to fights. It ended up being a nightmare for him. What was the point of that interview? What's the point of it. It's causing all these problems for no reason whatsoever. What was the point of doing that interview. What was the upside to that interview? There was none. No upside.
While Dana is right that the statement certainly hasn't helped Mitrione in any way, there was good reason for him to appear on the show. He was coming off his first win in almost two years. Additionally, the win was an impressive KO on the main card of an event. In most cases, it would be best for Mitrione to keep his name out and try to build a bigger fanbase. However, "most cases" doesn't include situations like these.
For now, the UFC hasn't given the exact terms of Matt's punishment. Bloody Elbow will keep you updated as we learn more.
