Sometimes I get very confused about how UFC matchmaking works. It seems like Joe Silva and Sean Shelby are allowed to sleep for three weeks, then someone wakes them up to make 63 fight bookings and then they're allowed to go back to their cave and hibernate again. This is one of those times when they're awake and firing off fight bookings like crazy and it's hard to keep up. But since it's my job, I'll pass a couple of 'em onto you. UFC on Fox 7 in San Jose has added two stellar bouts (via MMA Junkie).
The first sees top flyweight contender Joseph Benavidez face off with former Shooto conqueror Darren Uyenoyama. The other sounds like fireworks aplenty with TUF Brazil competitor Hugo Viana meeting knockout artist Francisco Rivera.
Benavidez (17-3, 4-1 UFC) is coming off a decisive win over top contender Ian McCall, but recently lost to champion Demetrious Johnson so he's probably out of the title picture for a while. Uyenoyama (8-3, 2-0 UFC) seems like a curious choice for Joe's next bout based on rankings, but it's an excellent style matchup and I can't wait to see it.
In the other announced bout, Viana (7-0, 2-0 UFC) meets fellow banger Rivera (11-3, 1 NC, 2-0, 1 NC UFC) in some natural matchmaking. Both men are coming off nice knockout finishes and aren't afraid to throw down. Viana knocked out Reuben Duran at the TUF 16 Finale while Rivera stopped Edwin Figueroa at UFC 156.
Both fights are expected to take place on the preliminary card. The main event of UFC on Fox 7 will see UFC lightweight champion defend his title against longtime Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez.
