UFC and WEC veteran, Kamal Shalorus has signed with ONE Fighting Championship and is set to make his debut on May 31st. The Iranian fighter announced the news on his facebook page, stating that he be competing in Manila to face one of the country's most popular fighters in Eduard Folayang.
Shalorus is an accomplished wrestler before transitioning to Mixed Martial Arts and was undefeated during his first 9 bouts. After three wins in the WEC, "the Price of Persia" struggled after the move to the UFC. He faced top guys such as Rafael Dos Anjos and Jim Miller, dropping those fights and subsequently getting released from the promotion.
He will look to reinvent himself when he heads to Asia, where his skills may be put to even bigger use on a continent which generally has fewer high caliber MMA wrestlers.
Folayang on the other hand, is a talented Wushu-based striker who has made a name for himself defeating several of the best fighters from Asia. The URCC champion is known to be one of the most entertaining fighters in the region, but he did show some weakness on his overall MMA game during his last fight. Top prospect and talented wrestler in Lowen Tynanes was able to control him on the ground, and ever since the bout, it was a hole Folayang has has been working hard to fill. The Filipino star recently decided to spend several weeks in the US shoring up his ground game with the likes of Robert Drysdale and Mark Munoz, and on May 31st, he promises to showcase his more complete and well rounded MMA game.
Although not much has been revealed about the card, this style match up will likely make this an early fight of the night candidate for ONE FC 9.
The event will be headlined by a featherweight title fight between Folayang's teammate in Honorio Banario, who will be looking to make his first title defense against the only man to ever beat him in Bae Young Kwon. Check out the current ONE FC 9 fight card below:
