Ben Henderson competed at the 2013 Pan Jiu Jitsu Championships last weekend. While I originally reported that he took bronze at this event, that was a mistake on my part and I apologize for not double checking the information. Henderson was eliminated in the third round of the tournament, before the medal rounds, but none-the-less it was an impressive showing.
In this match Henderson takes on Pedro Alcantara, who based on his patch is member of the Ralph Gracie team. Alcantara attempts several omoplatas in the match, and shows off wonderful technique to continually threaten sweeps and chaining submissions, but those MMA fans that remember Henderson's WEC days will know how likely Henderson is to tap to a shoulder lock. In the end it is Henderson who gets his hand raise over a clear exhausted Alcantara.
This match is an excellent example of the technical and physical abilities. Henderson will likely never be a major champion in BJJ without taking serious time out of his MMA career and the competition takes a serious jump at the black belt level, but it is still good to see a high profile will to challenge himself.
