NCAA Wrestling 2013: Results Recap Of Session 2

Andrew Carpenean-US PRESSWIRE

The plot thickens in Des Moines as several teams stake their claim for a national title. Some unsung wrestlers rise to the moment, while some of the highly seeded wrestlers have fallen. This is all part of the thrilling action the is the Division 1 NCAA Wrestling Championships.

The second round of the championship has been wrestled and the quarter finals are set. The race for the national title is now a four horse race.

Penn State is doing fine, but they have suffered a couple upsets. At 133 pounds, Jordan Conaway went down in the first round, as did Andrew Alton at 149 pounds. They were playing with house money with Conaway, so his ejection from the championship bracket doesn't set them back too far, but the Alton loss stings a bit. On the other hand, Alton's twin brother at 157 pounds is wrestling quite well; he's won three matches already and will face Jason Welch in the quarterfinals. Five other PSU wrestlers made the quarters with David Taylor at 165, Matt Brown at 174, and Ed Ruth at 184 all registering 2nd round pins. If PSU keeps this up, their lead will only widen.

Putting together an excellent first day is Oklahoma State. With their fire power, they stand the best shot of catching PSU. Tyler Caldwell at 165, Jordan Oliver at 149, Chris Perry at 174, and Alan Gelogaev at 285, Oklahoma State's big guns, have all done their job. Joining them in the quarters will be Jon Morrison at 133, Alex Dierenger at 157 and Blake Rosholt at 197. If OSU has an incredible quarterfinal round they will be positioned well to challenge for a title.

Iowa is in third, they've seen both the good and the bad from the Hawkeye wrestlers. Matt Mcdonough at 125, Tony Ramos at 133, Mark Ballweg at 141, Dan St. John at 157, and Mike Evans at 174 are all in the quarters as expected. A surprising Ethan Lofthouse will make a quarter finals appearance as well. Unfortunately, Hawkeye heavyweight Bobby Telford has hurt his knee and had to forfeit his second round match, if he is out for good, Iowa's title hopes may be dead.

It's a good thing that this is a double elimination tournament, because Minnesota is going to need big performances from its wrestlers in the wrestle backs if it wants to crawl back into contention. Aside from Cody Yohn's victory at 165, the Gopher's second round was a disaster, with Nick Dardanes at 141, Dylan Ness at 149 and Kevin Steinhaus at 184 getting bounced out of the championship bracket. Still, Minnesota will be well represented in the quarters with Yohn, Chris Dardanes at 133, Logan Storley at 174, Scott Schiller at 197 and Tony Nelson at Heavyweight.

The quarter finals tomorrow morning will give us a better picture of the championship picture. Keep an eye on the 141 pound weight class quarters which feature some wrestlers from teams who rarely, if ever, feature a quarter finalist- Franklin & Marshall's Richard Durso and the Citadel's Ugi Khishignyam.

I'll see you tomorrow morning for the live thread during the ESPNU broadcast.
