A recap of the UFC 158 main event bout between Georges St. Pierre and Nick Diaz for the welterweight title. St. Pierre kept his title with a unanimous decision victory.
In the main event of UFC 158, Georges St. Pierre finally put nemesis Nick Diaz in the rear-view mirror with a unanimous decision victory over the former Strikeforce champ. Most expected to see GSP try to take Diaz down for most of the fight, but he actually kept it standing for over half of it and won that portion as well. Between his strong jab and the inevitable nine takedowns, it was all GSP. All three judges had it 50-45 for the French Canadian superstar, who was competing in his hometown for the fourth time in the UFC.
St. Pierre (24-2) won his eighth straight title defense and has been victorious in eleven bouts in a row overall. Diaz (24-9) dropped his second straight bout and is 1-2 in this most recent UFC run. He's 7-6 overall in the organization.
What was the high point of the fight?
The fight was entertaining, but it was probably the entrances for me. The crowd was all over Diaz and deafening when GSP made his entrance.
Where do they go from here?
St. Pierre is going straight into another title defense, this time against fellow UFC 158 winner Johny Hendricks. The lingering possibility of a bout with Anderson Silva is probably on the back burner for now since Anderson is scheduled to meet Chris Weidman in July.
Diaz could go in a lot of different directions. He could retire, since he has said there's nothing left for him in the sport. But if he does continue on in the UFC there are a ton of marketable matchups for him. A rematch with Carlos Condit is possible, as is a bout with Martin Kampmann. We'll just have to wait and see what Nick wants to do.
Watch now, later, or never?
Now. A lot of people love to criticize GSP for not finishing fights, but they're very rarely boring. This bout was quite good, and is definitely worth 25 minutes of your time.
