In the third main card fight of UFC 158, Jake Ellenberger picked up a huge victory with a first round knockout of former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nate Marquardt. Marquardt started strong, wading into the pocket and tagging Ellenberger's chin after landing a few kicks. After a minute or so of relative inactivity, Ellenberger caught Nate on the chin while he was trying to throw a kick. The punch stunned Nate, and the next two put him down. One more on the ground had him slumped over, unconscious.
He actually protested the stoppage, which was kind of silly considering that he was out. The finish came at the 3:00 mark round one. Ellenberger (29-6) improved to 8-2 in the UFC, while Marquardt (32-12-2) is now 10-5 in the UFC and has lost two in a row (one of those coming in Strikeforce). Ellenberger earned a $50,000 dollar bonus for the knockout of the night.
What was the high point of the fight?
The knockout. Ellenberger just destroyed him with the punches.
Where do they go from here?
Ellenberger is firmly back in title contention after being derailed for a bit by Martin Kampmann. I think he should fight Demian Maia in a number one contenders bout, with the winner getting to meet the winner of the eventual Georges St. Pierre vs. Johny Hendricks fight.
Marquardt is in a very precarious position. He did come in as a late replacement, but he has lost two in a row and looked bad in both of them. He has a high salary for a welterweight too, and has had issues with the organization in the past. Could he be released? Maybe. If not, a bout with someone like Siyar Bahadurzada would be pretty interesting.
Watch now, later, or never?
Now. The knockout is worth going out of your way to see.
