Johny Hendricks and Carlos Condit put on one of the best fights of the year, but it was Hendricks who got his hand raised with a unanimous decision victory in their UFC 158 welterweight bout.
Johny Hendricks and Carlos Condit looked like a dream fight on paper, and it turned out to be even better than expected. Hendricks used his wrestling to score a total of 12 takedowns over 15 minutes, but Condit got up from every single one of them and bombed away when he was upright. Both men blasted away standing, with Condit taking Hendricks' vaunted left and firing back with everything he had. In the end though, Hendricks got his hand raised via unanimous decision. All three judges had it 29-28.
It will go in the books as undoubtedly one of the best fights of 2013, and it might have looked different with two more rounds. But Hendricks continued his campaign towards a UFC welterweight title shot.
Hendricks threw his version of H-Bomb four seconds into the fight but Condit took it. He threw another and stunned Condit enough to get a takedown. But he just got up and walked away. Condit attacked but got taken down again, and Hendricks let him up again. Hendricks missed with an uppercut but got another takedown. Condit rolled over and popped up though. Hendricks unloaded with four lefts, but Condit used a kimura to take Johny's back. Johny stood up and shucked Condit off. Condit landed a huge front kick to the face, but ate another Hendricks left at the horn.
Round two was much of the same at the start, with Hendricks connecting with the left but eating a flying knee in return. Hendricks got two takedowns, but Condit got up quickly after both. Condit attacked with knees and body work. Another huge flying knee looked devastating, but Hendricks just scooped Condit up and slammed him. Hendricks got another takedown before the end of the round.
Hendricks might have injured his left hand in the second round, but it didn't stop him from throwing it early in the third. Hendricks went for a takedown as expected, and he was able to control position for longer than he had at any other point in the fight. Carlos managed to finally get up with three minutes to go and the fighters exchanged a bevy of strikes. Condit missed with a kick and Hendricks took his back. That led to yet another takedown, but it was Condit doing damage and Hendricks let him up. Two more takedowns from Hendricks came and went with Condit getting up and blasting away right to the final horn.
Folks, it doesn't get much better than that in MMA.
