It wasn't pretty, but Mike Ricci picked up his first UFC win by unanimous decision over Colin Fletcher at UFC 158.
Many people were puzzled by the UFC's choice to put a lightweight bout between Mike Ricci and Colin Fletcher on the UFC 158 main card. The fighters didn't do a lot to change the minds of doubters either, displaying downright tepid striking at times on route to going the whole 15 minutes. Ricci finally got into an advantageous position late, but couldn't get the finish. He ended up taking the unanimous decision with three 30-27 scores.
Both fighters looked to kick coming out of the gate, but most of them were getting blocked. Finally they opened up with their hands a bit halfway through the round and each guy connected. The most exciting thing that happened was a groin kick with about 45 seconds to go.
Ricci came out stronger in round two, landing a head kick and geting a takedown. Ricci stacked Fletcher up into a strange position, then took his back. Fletcher got back up, but he was cut open. The pace slowed again in the middle part of the round, with neither guy landing much of anything except for a few kicks. Fletcher landed a spinning backfist while Ricci was just kicking and throwing lackluster straight rights for the rest of the round.
Fletcher's corner told him to go out and get a takedown so he tried early in the third, but Ricci rebuffed him. They went through the motions for the next three minutes while the crowd booed. Ricci finally got a takedown despite Fletcher grabbing the cage. Ricci got full back mount with 30 seconds to go but ran out of time while hunting for a choke and armbar.
