I'm not talking about the press conference, or whatever other pre-fight fluffery Zuffa wants their fighters to engage in. I mean, has anyone else considered that the volatile Diaz might not show up to the actual fight?
On Sunday morning we might end up looking at the Braulio Estima match as foreshadowing. Once again Diaz has been scheduled against an overwhelming favorite- once again he's a huge underdog in an almost no-win situation, this time in a vastly more public setting. Whether you're a huge Diaz fan or foe, I don't think anyone can really deny he's clearly emotionally unstable and prone to paranoia. His default mode when he can't win and he feels the world is against him, seems to be to run. I think it's quite possible that, under enormous pressure (much of it generated by his own 'me against the world' mentality), Diaz will simply crack and no-show.
If that happens, the rest is pretty predictable- Dana White will try to switch Hendricks to fight GSP, the ever-cautious GSP will refuse, and White (who's almost as unstable as Diaz, just in a different, more ego-centric way) will explode at the press conference and castigate all parties. Almost worth the whole thing happening, just to watch White's epic meltdown.
Anyways, I'm not saying will Diaz no-show the fight- only that, with his history of doing similar things and his clear immaturity, he's clearly a threat to do so. I'm sure Zuffa management has thought the same thing and is biting their nails right now, praying the mercurial son of Stockton will show up to one last, final fight before purgatory.
