Dave Begel, an ignorant Milwaukee sports writer, recently penned an article that speaks to all things ignorant about MMA and by extension WMMA. You can read his full article here. In his article you can almost hear him panting as he describes the scene for a WMMA match:
"Think about it: Put two women in scanty clothes into a locked room (the octagon), let them take off after each other and and roll around on the ground, legs locked together and sweat dripping off each of them. Sound like some kind of porn? Of course, and it plays into the fantasy of lots and lots of men."
Dave has his own issues, it is obvious he writes these words and finds some kind of disgust in himself that doesn't exist in reality. If there is a #rallyformarkhunt there should be a rally for #davebegelisignornt. Anyone who has a faint understanding of the sport will have their angst rise at the words of this neanderthal. For some inexplicable reason he gives boxing a pass for its violence but calls MMA barbaric, this displays a complete lack of understanding or a general "Get off my damn lawn!"ness. The fact that he doesn't understand that a liver kick well placed has the same punishing effect of a body shot to the same region shows his prejudice against the sport. That the idea of boxing IS to hurt the other person. Let alone the damage of football's players smashing at high impact, checks against the board in hockey, an aggressive rebound in basketball, or a hard slide into second to break up the double play are all meant to hurt the opponent. This is sports. But, it is the sexual undertones that Dave brings to the surface in his column that are most disturbing. That he sees some lesbian, sexual fantasy played out in the guise of sports is embarrassing. Bas eventually could not stand in the face of such backwards ignorance and had to let him go. But is it pervasive? I would hope not. I think most MMA fans see the beauty of Ronda's technical brilliance and aren't needing of a cold shower or a shag after watching her display her talents.
WMMA still has a long way to go. The Rousey/Liz bout was a fantastic way to pave the road for a future of the sport. However, we, as the fan bearers of MMA, need to BOO this man, BOO his ignorance, for ignorance only shrivels when exposed to the beautiful light of truth. WMMA is Beautiful!
