In a recent interview on Canada's Sportsnet channel, Women's Champion Ronda Rousey was asked for and gave her opinion on disgraced ex-Strikeforce champion Cris Cyborg, saying she almost destroyed the sport of Women's MMA and saying she has no entitlement to fight in the UFC with special exceptions just for her.
Rarely one to mince their words, Ronda Rousey was on form in the above interview clip with Showdown Joe on Canada's Sportsnet channel, the Great White North's equivalent to ESPN.
Echoing many sentiments other media members have said -- including yours truly -- regarding Cristiane Santos, the Bantamweight champion and Judo bronze medallist claims 'Cyborg' nearly destroyed Women's MMA, and that there are other WMMA fighters who we ought to be focusing on as future title contenders down the line.
A few choice quotes (transcription mine):
" ... I really don't know where this sense of entitlement comes from, she hasn't had a recorded win in over 3 years. I mean there's so many more women, look at Sara McMann: she's undefeated, she's a silver medallist wrestler, and people like that are the people we should really be looking forward to fighting. We're not going to be making exceptions and create divisions for someone that was a fraud and defamed the sport.
She almost destroyed Women's MMA, I mean think about it, the entire sport stagnated under her, and she cared more about having an unfair advantage in winning fights than she really cared about the sport itself, and it suffered under her. If she wants the only title that matters, she needs to go in the only division that the UFC has. We're not making exceptions for cheaters, she was exposed as a fraud, she should be the one willing to make the change to clear her name".
Ouch. Rousey goes on to talk about Cyborg routinely missing weight at 145lbs anyway, making the idea of a catchweight pointless in its own right.
What do you think? Is Rousey right on the money, or does Cyborg have any right to fight her at a catchweight or Featherweight?
