Today' we're back with the SB Nation rankings in the featherweight division. The panel, as always, consists of two writers from each of the big three SBN MMA sites - Thomas Myers and Brian Hemminger from MMA Mania, Ariel Helwani and Dave Doyle from MMA Fighting, and myself and Dallas Winston from Bloody Elbow.
Our six panelists were basically in agreement on who the top 10 guys were in this division (only two other guys got votes), but other than UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo in the top spot, we were all over the board in terms of who belonged where. Ranking fighters new to the division is tough sometimes, and while some believe that a fighter shouldn't be ranked without a win in the division, all six of us agreed that Frankie Edgar deserved to be in the top five nonetheless.
Without further ado, let's get to the chart:
(Scoring: Fighters are given 10 points for a first-place vote, nine points for a second, etc., down to one point for 10th place. The results are then tallied up and presented here. Official SB Nation rankings policy: Fighters under commission suspension are ineligible to be ranked during the duration of their suspension or if they have licensing issues. This does not affect any featherweight fighters under consideration at the moment).
Don't expect much change in terms of the top five in this division anytime soon. The champ isn't scheduled to fight until August (against another guy dropping from lightweight, Anthony Pettis), and Chad Mendes' will now be meeting # 10 Clay Guida on April 20th. The other three guys aren't currently booked, though Ricardo Lamas says he's fighting in May and it could very well be against Edgar or Chan Sung Jung. About the only thing going on in the next little while is # 7 Dustin Poirier facing off with # 9 Cub Swanson in the UK this weekend at UFC on Fuel 7.
