Shortly after the UFC surprisingly passed on his services, the highly ranked free agent has finally found a home. After mulling over a few offers from different promotions, undefeated Bellator champion Ben Askren will now ply his trade in Asia as he has decided to sign with ONE Fighting Championship.
Multiple sources close to the situation have confirmed the news to BloodyElbow.com, stating that the top ranked welterweight has indeed decided to take an offer with the Asian promotion. An official announcement is expected to be made by ONE FC officials in the coming days.
The news comes after word that Askren will also be joining the Singapore-based camp Evolve MMA. The former Wrestling Olympian will now be splitting time training at both teams starting early preparations at Roufusport in the US, and ending his fight camps in Singapore.
After being released from Bellator, Askren originally wanted to face off against Georges St-Pierre and the other top level UFC welterweights, but when that option was no longer available, he opted for a promotion that could make it worth his while. Much like how they made Bibiano Fernandes pass on the UFC, it looks like ONE FC fit that mold and gave him the best offer available.
The former 2-time NCAA Division I Champ will now be looking to rule a ONE FC division that currently lists competitors such as Nobutatsu Suzuki, Adam Kayoom, Brock Larson, Gregor Gracie, Igor Gracie, and Jung Hwan Cha among others.
Askren is 12-0 so far in just 4 years since he made the jump to mixed martial arts. He has dominated most of his opponents in Bellator with a smothering wrestling game, and has finished his last two fights by TKO. He's expected to make his ONE FC debut on 2014, and will be looking to take advantage of the promotion's rule set that allows kicks, and more importantly, knees, on the ground.
