Over the past year there has been countless submission wins that have stuck out for their own reason, there was Rousey/Carmouche that was capped off with the picture perfect first round armbar, Henderson/Pettis that ended in a way no one could have predicted, Burkman/Fitch that saw the unsubmittable be submitted rather fast. All these finishes stick out for their own right but which ones are really "Submission Of The Year" Candidates?
A submission is the Checkmate of the MMA world, for some the most gratifying way to win and as a viewer I cant get enough of them but what actually constitutes one as the best of the year? Is it where two greatest on the mat go head to head and one prevails? ( i.e Werdum/Nogueira ) the one no one expected? ( i.e Pettis/Henderson II ) or the one that everyone expected but everyone wanted to see? ( i.e Rousey/Carmouche )
In my opinion this year will be overwhelmingly in the favour of Rousey's first round Armbar of Liz Carmouche, the atmosphere around the first women's fight in UFC history was crazy and for it to end with her precedented move was the cherry on top and for that not be the 'Submission Of The Year' would be a shame. Not many Submission get better than that, and for 2013 it should be the one.
