One of the weirder things that happened at UFC on Fox 9 was the saga of Cody McKenzie. The former TUF fighter came to the cage for his bout with Sam Stout in basketball shorts, had no sponsor banner, and only had one man in his corner. Referee Herb Dean actually had to remove the price tag from the shorts during the fight, since they had just been bought a few minutes beforehand. So how does this happen? UFC president Dana White said at the post-fight press conference that it was embarrassing, but it was the UFC's fault overall:
"Yeah how did ya like that one? That was fantastic right? What that was was UFC amateur hour. We have a guy backstage that polices all the things, when you got a guy going out there...first of all, if it's not bad enough that he's out there with basketball shorts on, how about that he's still got the price tag on the shorts during the fight! Yeah, so it was pretty embarrassing."
When he was asked why McKenzie didn't have his shorts with him, White simply replied "Cody". Then elaborated:
"That's one of the weirdest things I've ever seen, and it's even weirder that we let it happen."
"Maybe he was going to fight in his jeans and said 'well, maybe I should get some shorts. I don't know. Cody McKenzie's a strange dude. But it's not Cody McKenzie's fault that happened tonight, it's the UFC's fault. We're here for a show on Fox, and it's pretty damn embarrassing. Pretty embarrassing. I could not be more embarrassed by this. I don't even know what to say. We're stupid. I was pissed."
White wasn't aware of a report stating that McKenzie didn't have a mouthpiece either, saying that he thought that had happened with McKenzie before. Kevin Iole of Yahoo tweeted that the CSAC director stated that Cody just forgot his shorts at the hotel and had to run across the street to buy some new ones or the fight would be delayed. There are also murmurs that the UFC team denied Cody's sponsors at the last minute, leaving him with no choice but to get new gear ASAP. McKenzie actually used a marker to write "907" on the shorts. which he left behind in the arena after the fight. Here's a pic via Mike Dolce:
That's not the end of the story though. Apparently his post-fight behavior was just as strange as the pre-fight stuff according to LVRJ's Adam Hill:
Only got worse for Cody after fight. He downed a couple shots and then had two beers, but kinda spit one up on himself in tunnel below arena— Adam Hill (@AdamHillLVRJ) December 14, 2013
(cont.) then tried to take beer outside to have a smoke, but wasn't allowed. Said it was probably for the best as he dribbled blood all over— Adam Hill (@AdamHillLVRJ) December 14, 2013
McKenzie lost a unanimous decision to Stout in the fight, by the way.
